BaseHall Celebrates its First Anniversary As Leading Food Hall in Hong Kong

August 17, 2021

[August 2021] Despite opening amidst a tumultuous year in Hong Kong, BaseHall is celebrating its first anniversary and continuing its mission to act as a platform for local culinary talent, whilst cementing its position as a go-to destination for foodie and cultural activities in the heart of Central.

Over the last year, the multi-concept food hall at Central’s Jardine House has delighted guests with the addition of new vendors and a series of exciting cultural and festive events. As it moves into its second year, BaseHall is reflecting on the wins during a year of uncertainty, including supporting its vendors throughout the pandemic and importantly, keeping all staff employed. And now, with the situation in Hong Kong continuing to improve, the food hall is ready to take things up a notch in its second year by introducing more gastronomic experiences and regular events.

From the very beginning, BaseHall’s mission was, and continues to be, to celebrate Hong Kong’s best homegrown culinary talent. Over two years, ten of the most exciting and upcoming concepts were handpicked to become the first operators at BaseHall. Thus, creating a truly diverse dining destination.

Since then, BaseHall has added a wealth of captivating new dining experiences over its first year. FRANCIS, the popular Middle Eastern eatery in Wan Chai headed by chef Asher Goldstein, became the first new operator to be added to the original line-up in May 2021. The popular BaseHall Bar introduced its WineHouse concept, debuting a highly curated collection of wines from across the world alongside sparkling Sakes and a refreshing cocktail menu. Meanwhile, Pub 1842, the pub concept overseen by local brewery Young Master Ales, launched its rotating culinary pop-up concept, Grub 1842, with its well-received series of indulgent Mac & Cheese options. Before the end of 2021, BaseHall will introduce three additional new exciting F&B partners to its roster of vendors.

Despite the uncertainty of ever-changing restrictions, BaseHall was also able to safely host several events over the year, living up to its ambition of becoming a multi-faceted space that’s unmatched in energy, diversity, and atmosphere. From fun-filled Oktoberfest and Cinco de Mayo fiestas to its first-ever Drag Bingo night and a regular rotation of comedy and DJ nights, BaseHall has gone beyond honouring the local food scene to celebrate local musicians, comedians, drag queens, and more.

Looking ahead, BaseHall will kick off its second year in style with an exhilarating anniversary party this August. “HEATWAVE” will bring the atmosphere of London’s famous Notting Hill summer carnival to BaseHall with exclusive food and drink offerings paired with the sounds of soca, samba, calypso, baile funk, and global bass beats that’ll have revellers dancing the night away. During the evening, “Makha” African Drum Dance, DJ Obeahmix, and Anisha Thai will make special appearances to get the crowd into the true carnival spirit. Later this year, BaseHall will reprise its wildly successful Oktoberfest event with Bavarian beer hall games, food and drinks galore. Also coming to BaseHall’s more regular stanza of event programming in the coming months are Acoustic Tuesdays and Quiz Wednesdays, kicking off in September respectively.

“We launched BaseHall in the middle of a devastating pandemic and to say our first year was tough is an understatement,” says Tom Andrews, Senior Asset Manager at Hongkong Land Limited. “Our aim here has always been to be a platform for creative chefs to develop new offerings and support local culinary talent, and despite the challenges of the last year, we’ve worked hard to ensure this was the case. We also intended to create a fun space that combined food, drinks, music, and more, and that’s exactly what we’ve done with our events line-up. But we’re ready to take things up a notch with even more exciting offerings in our second year and we can’t wait to welcome guests for new dining experiences and even more exciting events.”

“HEATWAVE” will be held at BaseHall from 6pm-10pm on Saturday, August 28. Tickets for the event are priced at HK$233 and are now available at Eventbrite.
